I’ve been to just about every country club, hotel, historical site and other wedding venues in the Washington DC area over the years but nothing is as dramatic and impressive as Trump National’s outdoor waterfall terrace overlooking the golf course and the Potomac River near Sterling, Va. An 80 ft. waterfall surrounds the large terrace which easily holds a couple of hundred people lucky enough to experience this amazing setting. There are so many choices for couples today in deciding on who to photograph their wedding, knowing what they want and should get, what it may cost and what is important in all of this. With thousands of new wedding photographers out there today, mostly part-timers with inexpensive digital cameras and the internet, it’s a free-for-all of misinformation and lack of quality standards. Everyone is an “expert” and all of this inexperience is detrimental to couples hoping to have a professional preservation of their wedding day memories.
Here is a link to the guide that I created using my 30+ years of experience. I hope it is useful in your planning and will help you to realize a great wedding experience with your photography!
It seems like we have photographed quite a few weddings this past year on rainy days. Emily and Jeff’s wedding last Saturday in Old Town Alexandria and the Ft. Belvoir Officers Club presented a few challenges that were overcome with plenty of enthusiasm… and umbrellas!
Nice thing about a rainy day is the softness of the lighting. Here are a couple of nice portraits of Emily and Jeff under an umbrella or outside the front door of the club but protected under a portico while it’s raining heavily. No extra lighting used, just the natural light there.

We photograph many events every year in Washington, DC and nearby Arlington, Va. Couples frequently request photographs with the beautiful settings available in Washington. A few of our favorite DC locations are shown in the following photographs. For more information on these locations and our photography see our website and/or call our studio at 703-790-1020. I toss out most of the catalogs we get in the mail but here is one that I wanted to share that I thought would be very useful to some of those planning a wedding: Exclusively Weddings is the company and a peak at their catalog is shown here. They feature all kinds of wedding accessories, invitations, favors, gifts–you name it. Their website is ExclusivelyWeddings.com. Click on the images to enlarge.
I was honored recently to be selected to photograph some gorgeous wedding gowns worn by equally gorgeous models at the beautiful Waterford Receptions venue in Springfield, Va. The models and the gowns were provided by the Alfred Angelo Bridal Salon in Springfield. See a few of the photographs here from the many I created for the Waterford and the Angelo folks.
Many couples today are often confused about the types of wedding albums available today, and I find myself often explaining the differences. MATTED albums have each photograph individually printed and mounted on each page. The couple usually chooses the layout of the photographs they select. These are more “traditional” albums although there are many varied cover treatments available. DIGITALLY-DESIGNED albums are where the photos that are selected by the couple are arranged using sophisticated software by a (hopefully) talented designer.
Our couples can select either type of album after the wedding. Some prefer the simplicity and elegance of the matted albums, some prefer the creative and often stunning sophistication of the digitally-designed books. Whichever you may prefer, you can be sure your wedding photographs will look GREAT! See our website for more information. Click on thumbnails to enlarge.
Nothing is better than a nicely designed and elegant wedding album of your beautiful wedding photographs. But would you want to lug it around and show it to your friends? The Philip Kent Studio is now offering purse-sized “albums” that you can carry anywhere of your treasured wedding photographs! They are printed and bound to the highest quality AND they’re surprisingly INexpensive! When you order your digitally-designed album with us we can add a soft-cover booklet of the same larger main album. Call us for more information and pricing at 703-790-1020. Leather Craftsmen is my favorite wedding album supplier. Their quality is simply unmatched in the industry. They introduced a few new colors this year. One is a silver-gray leather that looked so stunning when I received it for one of my couples, I thought I should take a photo of it for a blog post.
It also has a cover photo in a raised frame giving it a very distinctive look. Another recent album I ordered has one of their innovative cover stripes, all in rich Euro Leather. Copper, silver or gold engraving of a couple’s names and wedding date are usually added. Plus (and most other album company products are inferior to this) they bind their albums in a very sturdy and rugged book binding, designed to last for many, many years of use. The albums used by most photographers today are not as well made and won’t last as long. LC albums are simply the best pro wedding albums out there.

For a couple choosing a caterer for their wedding reception, there are s-o-o-o many to choose from in Northern Virginia–too many! Marco Polo Caterers has been in the wedding business even longer than I have, and that’s saying something. The original owner, Alfredo Pestana, started the business in 1973 and still runs it as a first-rate operation with the best food and service available.
Philip Kent’s relationship with them goes back not years, but decades (he’s older than I am). They have their own classic Italian restaurant and reception room but much of their catering is done onsite at many of the popular reception venues in the DC area. Top-of-the-Town in Arlington, the Cherry Blossom in Alexandria and Meadowlark Park near Wolf Trap are just a few.
For more information or to check out their next free tasting at the Marco Polo, see their website and contact the catering manager Xochitl Gutierrez (pronounced “Soachy”) at 703-281-3922.
